Narrative:
Lots of airport construction. We were taxiing from gate on taxiway Y. ATIS called for runway 4R for landing and departure. Our clearance was to taxi to runway 13C via taxiway Y and runway 13R, hold short of taxiway P. A B737 landed on runway 4R and was expected to use taxiway P. Then we were given further clearance to runway 13C via runway 31R to hold short of runway 4R. I turned right on taxiway P onto runway 4R. Ground control observed this and told us to make a 180 degree turn to leave runway 4R at taxiway P. This was a confusing clearance since this isn't the normal routing and taxiway P was not notamed closed. As a result, I had a preconceived notion about what my taxi would be and I did not correctly 'hear' what was actually given. The first officer didn't stop me, since he was trying to comprehend this nonstandard clearance. Supplemental information from acn 559090: initial clearance was taxi on taxiway Y, hold short of taxiway P, for a B737 landing on runway 4R. Further clearance to runway 13C was via taxiway 31R, hold short of runway 4R. The captain turned right on taxiway P onto runway 4R.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B757-300 CREW, TAXIING FOR TKOF AT MDW, MADE A WRONG TURN, INCURRING AN ACTIVE RWY WITHOUT A CLRNC.
Narrative: LOTS OF ARPT CONSTRUCTION. WE WERE TAXIING FROM GATE ON TXWY Y. ATIS CALLED FOR RWY 4R FOR LNDG AND DEP. OUR CLRNC WAS TO TAXI TO RWY 13C VIA TXWY Y AND RWY 13R, HOLD SHORT OF TXWY P. A B737 LANDED ON RWY 4R AND WAS EXPECTED TO USE TXWY P. THEN WE WERE GIVEN FURTHER CLRNC TO RWY 13C VIA RWY 31R TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 4R. I TURNED R ON TXWY P ONTO RWY 4R. GND CTL OBSERVED THIS AND TOLD US TO MAKE A 180 DEG TURN TO LEAVE RWY 4R AT TXWY P. THIS WAS A CONFUSING CLRNC SINCE THIS ISN'T THE NORMAL ROUTING AND TXWY P WAS NOT NOTAMED CLOSED. AS A RESULT, I HAD A PRECONCEIVED NOTION ABOUT WHAT MY TAXI WOULD BE AND I DID NOT CORRECTLY 'HEAR' WHAT WAS ACTUALLY GIVEN. THE FO DIDN'T STOP ME, SINCE HE WAS TRYING TO COMPREHEND THIS NONSTANDARD CLRNC. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 559090: INITIAL CLRNC WAS TAXI ON TXWY Y, HOLD SHORT OF TXWY P, FOR A B737 LNDG ON RWY 4R. FURTHER CLRNC TO RWY 13C WAS VIA TXWY 31R, HOLD SHORT OF RWY 4R. THE CAPT TURNED R ON TXWY P ONTO RWY 4R.
