Narrative:
First officer and I were at the gate in las about to depart on the last leg of our 4 day. Being the nice captain that I am, I programmed the route into the FMC to help out my first officer. I then left my seat to greet our boarding passenger (without first verifying the routing on the legs page). It was first officer's leg, the departure seemed normal with the autoplt hooked up to the LNAV, until reaching miney intersection (the miney departure). The autoplt then made a big right turn followed shortly afterwards by a call from las departure control inquiring about our heading. Departure then gave us a left turn to 180 degree direct to snead intersection to rejoin the published departure. I must have misprogrammed the route to fly direct to oak from miney intersection. Big mistake! This error (errors) could have been prevented by simply being more careful with entering the route into the FMC and most importantly by verifying with the legs page. We also would not have had this course deviation if we would have paid closer attention during the departure.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B737-700 CAPT MISPROGRAMMED SID IN FMC CAUSING DEV FROM THE CLRNC RTE. DEP CTLR INTERVENED AND VECTORED RPTR BACK TO SID ROUTING.
Narrative: FO AND I WERE AT THE GATE IN LAS ABOUT TO DEPART ON THE LAST LEG OF OUR 4 DAY. BEING THE NICE CAPT THAT I AM, I PROGRAMMED THE RTE INTO THE FMC TO HELP OUT MY FO. I THEN LEFT MY SEAT TO GREET OUR BOARDING PAX (WITHOUT FIRST VERIFYING THE ROUTING ON THE LEGS PAGE). IT WAS FO'S LEG, THE DEP SEEMED NORMAL WITH THE AUTOPLT HOOKED UP TO THE LNAV, UNTIL REACHING MINEY INTXN (THE MINEY DEP). THE AUTOPLT THEN MADE A BIG R TURN FOLLOWED SHORTLY AFTERWARDS BY A CALL FROM LAS DEP CTL INQUIRING ABOUT OUR HDG. DEP THEN GAVE US A L TURN TO 180 DEG DIRECT TO SNEAD INTXN TO REJOIN THE PUBLISHED DEP. I MUST HAVE MISPROGRAMMED THE RTE TO FLY DIRECT TO OAK FROM MINEY INTXN. BIG MISTAKE! THIS ERROR (ERRORS) COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED BY SIMPLY BEING MORE CAREFUL WITH ENTERING THE RTE INTO THE FMC AND MOST IMPORTANTLY BY VERIFYING WITH THE LEGS PAGE. WE ALSO WOULD NOT HAVE HAD THIS COURSE DEV IF WE WOULD HAVE PAID CLOSER ATTN DURING THE DEP.
