Narrative:
After departure, we got a fuel confign light plus EICAS message. The left tank quantity showed approximately 1500 pounds less fuel than the right tank. Both tanks were balanced at takeoff. I talked with the air carrier maintenance controller and dispatch. I made the decision after discussing the situation with the first officer and, not knowing what happened to the fuel, that the safest action was to return to denver. The flight attendants and passenger were advised of the problem and our intention to return to denver. The landing and taxi in were normal.
