Narrative:
After landing on runway 9L we were told to clear the runway on taxiway P. As we exited the runway there was opposite direction traffic on taxiway P. The only way to clear the runway was now to turn onto taxiway H which is what I did. I made a half right turn onto taxiway H and put the nose of the aircraft onto the far side of taxiway H. I was confident that all parts of the aircraft were clear of the hold line for runway 9L. When we finally got through to ground he told us to expedite a turn onto taxiway H as we were not clear of the hold line. I know it is tight in that location but we were very aware of the fact that we needed to clear the runway and I was sure I had done so. I think if a turn onto another taxiway other than the one used for clearing the runway is required, that clearance should be given by tower as it occasionally is at other locations at ord.

Title: MD80 PLT AT ORD MEETS ACFT MOVING OPPOSITE DIRECTION ON TXWY WHEN INSTRUCTED TO CLR THE RWY.
Narrative: AFTER LNDG ON RWY 9L WE WERE TOLD TO CLR THE RWY ON TXWY P. AS WE EXITED THE RWY THERE WAS OPPOSITE DIRECTION TFC ON TXWY P. THE ONLY WAY TO CLR THE RWY WAS NOW TO TURN ONTO TXWY H WHICH IS WHAT I DID. I MADE A HALF R TURN ONTO TXWY H AND PUT THE NOSE OF THE ACFT ONTO THE FAR SIDE OF TXWY H. I WAS CONFIDENT THAT ALL PARTS OF THE ACFT WERE CLR OF THE HOLD LINE FOR RWY 9L. WHEN WE FINALLY GOT THROUGH TO GND HE TOLD US TO EXPEDITE A TURN ONTO TXWY H AS WE WERE NOT CLR OF THE HOLD LINE. I KNOW IT IS TIGHT IN THAT LOCATION BUT WE WERE VERY AWARE OF THE FACT THAT WE NEEDED TO CLR THE RWY AND I WAS SURE I HAD DONE SO. I THINK IF A TURN ONTO ANOTHER TXWY OTHER THAN THE ONE USED FOR CLRING THE RWY IS REQUIRED, THAT CLRNC SHOULD BE GIVEN BY TWR AS IT OCCASIONALLY IS AT OTHER LOCATIONS AT ORD.
