Narrative:
We were taking off runway 1L at las with a clearance that we understood as a 050 degree heading to join the wyldd 1 departure. We initially started the turn to join the second part of the departure at which point ATC asked us if we were on a 050 degree heading. We quickly turned back to the heading and were confused at this direction. Looking back at our clearance, we were cleared 050 degree heading, radar vectors to join the departure. Our mistake combined with following FMS guidance in a navigation mode, resulted in a deviation from our prescribed clearance. I feel that our error could have been avoided had we stayed in heading mode, reconfirmed ambiguous clearance instructions and verified once again (always query ATC). Supplemental information from acn 560177: we mistook our clearance to be a 050 degree heading to intercept the wyldd 1 departure, and turned right to intercept the course instead of maintaining the 050 degree heading.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CLRED FOR A RADAR VECTOR ON DEP FROM LAS, NV, A FLC FOLLOWS THE PLANNED RNAV DEP IN ERROR.
Narrative: WE WERE TAKING OFF RWY 1L AT LAS WITH A CLRNC THAT WE UNDERSTOOD AS A 050 DEG HDG TO JOIN THE WYLDD 1 DEP. WE INITIALLY STARTED THE TURN TO JOIN THE SECOND PART OF THE DEP AT WHICH POINT ATC ASKED US IF WE WERE ON A 050 DEG HDG. WE QUICKLY TURNED BACK TO THE HDG AND WERE CONFUSED AT THIS DIRECTION. LOOKING BACK AT OUR CLRNC, WE WERE CLRED 050 DEG HDG, RADAR VECTORS TO JOIN THE DEP. OUR MISTAKE COMBINED WITH FOLLOWING FMS GUIDANCE IN A NAV MODE, RESULTED IN A DEV FROM OUR PRESCRIBED CLRNC. I FEEL THAT OUR ERROR COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED HAD WE STAYED IN HDG MODE, RECONFIRMED AMBIGUOUS CLRNC INSTRUCTIONS AND VERIFIED ONCE AGAIN (ALWAYS QUERY ATC). SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 560177: WE MISTOOK OUR CLRNC TO BE A 050 DEG HDG TO INTERCEPT THE WYLDD 1 DEP, AND TURNED R TO INTERCEPT THE COURSE INSTEAD OF MAINTAINING THE 050 DEG HDG.
