Climbing through FL180, tail compartment high light came on. Completed checklist and high light did not go out. Declared emergency and diverted into austin. Temperature high light did go out after we were into the descent.

Title: AN MD80 RETURNS LANDS AFTER THE MASTER CAUTION WARNING SYS INDICATES A HIGH TEMP INDICATION IN THE TAIL COMPARTMENT AT DFW, TX.
Narrative: CLBING THROUGH FL180, TAIL COMPARTMENT HIGH LIGHT CAME ON. COMPLETED CHKLIST AND HIGH LIGHT DID NOT GO OUT. DECLARED EMER AND DIVERTED INTO AUSTIN. TEMP HIGH LIGHT DID GO OUT AFTER WE WERE INTO THE DSCNT.
