Narrative:
We were on an IFR clearance pmd, J6 hec, J64 fmn. Near TOC we received a revised clearance direct dag, las vegas (no state stipulated), fmn. I sensed that las vegas, nv (las) was meant but inadvertently entered lvs (las vegas, NM). I asked for and received a routine concurrence from the first officer. Shortly after entering the change, and while passing over dag, I noticed that the magnetic course from lvs to fmn was 282 degrees which was obviously in error. Unfortunately I started trying to determine whether I had the right farmington rather than the right las vegas. Shortly after passing dag on a course of approximately 070 degrees the controller turned us left to 030 degrees and about 30 seconds later further left to 320 degrees. After about a min, he stated that he 'didn't know what happened but that our clearance was dag, las vegas, nv, fmn' and shortly after that cleared us direct las. I feel that we were a little hurried because of our proximity to dag when receiving the modified clearance, but clearly our request for, and receipt of, concurrence inside the cockpit should have been other than 'routine.'
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: HEADING TRACK DEV OCCURS AFTER THE PIC OF A LARGE CPR JET ACCEPTS A REVISED RTE CLRNC, INPUTTING LVS INTO THE FMC VERSUS LAS, 10 NM E OF DAG, CA.
Narrative: WE WERE ON AN IFR CLRNC PMD, J6 HEC, J64 FMN. NEAR TOC WE RECEIVED A REVISED CLRNC DIRECT DAG, LAS VEGAS (NO STATE STIPULATED), FMN. I SENSED THAT LAS VEGAS, NV (LAS) WAS MEANT BUT INADVERTENTLY ENTERED LVS (LAS VEGAS, NM). I ASKED FOR AND RECEIVED A ROUTINE CONCURRENCE FROM THE FO. SHORTLY AFTER ENTERING THE CHANGE, AND WHILE PASSING OVER DAG, I NOTICED THAT THE MAGNETIC COURSE FROM LVS TO FMN WAS 282 DEGS WHICH WAS OBVIOUSLY IN ERROR. UNFORTUNATELY I STARTED TRYING TO DETERMINE WHETHER I HAD THE RIGHT FARMINGTON RATHER THAN THE RIGHT LAS VEGAS. SHORTLY AFTER PASSING DAG ON A COURSE OF APPROX 070 DEGS THE CTLR TURNED US L TO 030 DEGS AND ABOUT 30 SECONDS LATER FURTHER L TO 320 DEGS. AFTER ABOUT A MIN, HE STATED THAT HE 'DIDN'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED BUT THAT OUR CLRNC WAS DAG, LAS VEGAS, NV, FMN' AND SHORTLY AFTER THAT CLRED US DIRECT LAS. I FEEL THAT WE WERE A LITTLE HURRIED BECAUSE OF OUR PROX TO DAG WHEN RECEIVING THE MODIFIED CLRNC, BUT CLRLY OUR REQUEST FOR, AND RECEIPT OF, CONCURRENCE INSIDE THE COCKPIT SHOULD HAVE BEEN OTHER THAN 'ROUTINE.'
