Narrative:

Leaving teb, using the teterboro 5 departure off runway 24. Clearance was to maintain 6000 ft. Following rotation, we continued our climb. Departure controller cleared us to 6000 ft, but brought to our attention that we were to maintain 1500 ft until 4.5 DME off teb VOR. No traffic conflicts existed, but she stated that on a busy day not following the SID exactly, could cause a problem. She said that it wasn't a problem today. I believe the clearance to maintain 6000 ft may have led us to believe, that on a day with very little traffic, we were expected to climb directly to 6000 ft. Normally when leaving on this departure, you're required to maintain 2000 ft. This deviation from the normal clearance wasn't effectively processed by us. The SID was clear, but we misinterpreted that clearance.

Title: ALTDEV EXCURSION WHEN A BE40 FLC CLBS ABOVE THE ALT DEPICTED ON THE TEB 5 SID, 2 MI SW OF TEB, NJ.

Narrative: LEAVING TEB, USING THE TETERBORO 5 DEP OFF RWY 24. CLRNC WAS TO MAINTAIN 6000 FT. FOLLOWING ROTATION, WE CONTINUED OUR CLB. DEP CTLR CLRED US TO 6000 FT, BUT BROUGHT TO OUR ATTN THAT WE WERE TO MAINTAIN 1500 FT UNTIL 4.5 DME OFF TEB VOR. NO TFC CONFLICTS EXISTED, BUT SHE STATED THAT ON A BUSY DAY NOT FOLLOWING THE SID EXACTLY, COULD CAUSE A PROB. SHE SAID THAT IT WASN'T A PROB TODAY. I BELIEVE THE CLRNC TO MAINTAIN 6000 FT MAY HAVE LED US TO BELIEVE, THAT ON A DAY WITH VERY LITTLE TFC, WE WERE EXPECTED TO CLB DIRECTLY TO 6000 FT. NORMALLY WHEN LEAVING ON THIS DEP, YOU'RE REQUIRED TO MAINTAIN 2000 FT. THIS DEV FROM THE NORMAL CLRNC WASN'T EFFECTIVELY PROCESSED BY US. THE SID WAS CLR, BUT WE MISINTERPRETED THAT CLRNC.
