Narrative:
I was approaching flying cloud airport and had been cleared to land on runway 27L, with instructions to enter a left downwind. I was approaching from the southwest. Stupidly, I turned left to a right downwind for runway 9R. As I entered base, I announced 'aircraft X on base for runway 27R, confirm cleared to land?' the tower said 'cleared for runway 27L', so I confirmed and moved over to the left runway. At that point, I heard a pilot announce that 'we have traffic in front of us.' I looked behind me, thinking he was also on approach. Then I heard him say, 'we are turning to avoid traffic.' at that point, as I saw him at my 1 O'clock position, I realized I was on approach at the wrong end of the runway and banked left to get out of the departure zone. Tower then told me to turn right to a right downwind for runway 27L. Landing was uneventful. I am completely at fault after a full day of flying. I will, from now on, point with my finger to the compass coordinate of the runway I've been assigned, to redirect my brain. In this case, I just wasn't paying attention to what I was told. Although I am fully responsible, I also believe the tower controller should have made visual confirmation of my arrival in the pattern, and perhaps she would have caught my misdirection. This was a stupid mistake.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PA28 PLT HAS NMAC IN TFC PATTERN AT CFM.
Narrative: I WAS APCHING FLYING CLOUD ARPT AND HAD BEEN CLRED TO LAND ON RWY 27L, WITH INSTRUCTIONS TO ENTER A L DOWNWIND. I WAS APCHING FROM THE SW. STUPIDLY, I TURNED L TO A R DOWNWIND FOR RWY 9R. AS I ENTERED BASE, I ANNOUNCED 'ACFT X ON BASE FOR RWY 27R, CONFIRM CLRED TO LAND?' THE TWR SAID 'CLRED FOR RWY 27L', SO I CONFIRMED AND MOVED OVER TO THE L RWY. AT THAT POINT, I HEARD A PLT ANNOUNCE THAT 'WE HAVE TFC IN FRONT OF US.' I LOOKED BEHIND ME, THINKING HE WAS ALSO ON APCH. THEN I HEARD HIM SAY, 'WE ARE TURNING TO AVOID TFC.' AT THAT POINT, AS I SAW HIM AT MY 1 O'CLOCK POS, I REALIZED I WAS ON APCH AT THE WRONG END OF THE RWY AND BANKED L TO GET OUT OF THE DEP ZONE. TWR THEN TOLD ME TO TURN R TO A R DOWNWIND FOR RWY 27L. LNDG WAS UNEVENTFUL. I AM COMPLETELY AT FAULT AFTER A FULL DAY OF FLYING. I WILL, FROM NOW ON, POINT WITH MY FINGER TO THE COMPASS COORDINATE OF THE RWY I'VE BEEN ASSIGNED, TO REDIRECT MY BRAIN. IN THIS CASE, I JUST WASN'T PAYING ATTN TO WHAT I WAS TOLD. ALTHOUGH I AM FULLY RESPONSIBLE, I ALSO BELIEVE THE TWR CTLR SHOULD HAVE MADE VISUAL CONFIRMATION OF MY ARR IN THE PATTERN, AND PERHAPS SHE WOULD HAVE CAUGHT MY MISDIRECTION. THIS WAS A STUPID MISTAKE.
