Narrative:
On sep/thu/02, I was the captain on flight from ZZZ to bur, ca. First officer was flying the leg. On landing rollout at bur, ECAM reported 'engine #1 fail.' I advised the tower of our engine fail indication, and tower reported 'flames were coming out of the left engine.' based on tower information, I closed the fuel control lever, pulled the fire handle and discharged the fire agent. Airport crash fire rescue equipment trucks inspected the aircraft and stated no fire from engine could be seen. Maintenance towed aircraft to hangar. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the crew was landing on runway 8. This leaves 4806 ft to stop after a landing at the 1000 ft point. This is extremely short for a 300000 pound aircraft. The approach was flown to minimums, and it was dark. The first officer was anxious about getting stopped and probably used more reverse thrust than normal. He also did not come out of reverse thrust as soon as he should have. This resulted in a series of engine stalls, which triggered the ECAM engine fail warning. Each time the engine surged, flame came out the tail pipe, causing the tower warning of fire. Maintenance borescoped the engine. No damage was found. The fire bottle was replaced, and the aircraft departed on time that evening.

Title: A310 CREW HAD AN ECAM 'ENG #1 FAIL' WARNING. THE TWR RPTED FLAMES FROM THE L WING AREA.
Narrative: ON SEP/THU/02, I WAS THE CAPT ON FLT FROM ZZZ TO BUR, CA. FO WAS FLYING THE LEG. ON LNDG ROLLOUT AT BUR, ECAM RPTED 'ENG #1 FAIL.' I ADVISED THE TWR OF OUR ENG FAIL INDICATION, AND TWR RPTED 'FLAMES WERE COMING OUT OF THE L ENG.' BASED ON TWR INFO, I CLOSED THE FUEL CTL LEVER, PULLED THE FIRE HANDLE AND DISCHARGED THE FIRE AGENT. ARPT CFR TRUCKS INSPECTED THE ACFT AND STATED NO FIRE FROM ENG COULD BE SEEN. MAINT TOWED ACFT TO HANGAR. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE CREW WAS LNDG ON RWY 8. THIS LEAVES 4806 FT TO STOP AFTER A LNDG AT THE 1000 FT POINT.
