Narrative:
I misunderstood ground's taxi instruction and taxied to the wrong runway. Evidently, ground cleared me to runway 34R. Just prior to my departure, I had observed planes landing to the south on runways 16L&right, so even though my instructions were to runway 34R, I was thinking runway 16. During my taxi to runway 16, nothing was said from ground control and there was not any traffic around. So, after my run-up, tower asked me where I was. I said I was near the runway and he said I had taxied to the wrong runway. I asked him if I could depart runway 16L and tower said yes, and he cleared me for takeoff on runway 16L. There was not any conflict with other traffic. I had simply misunderstood the taxi instruction because of my earlier visual observation of traffic arriving and departing to south. I learned a good lesson: be more attentive to controller instructions.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A ROCKWELL TWIN COMMANDER 500 PLT TAXIED TO THE OPPOSITE END OF THE RWY TO WHICH ASSIGNED DUE TO DISTR OF OTHER OBSERVED TFC ARRIVING AND DEPARTING FROM THAT DIRECTION.
Narrative: I MISUNDERSTOOD GND'S TAXI INSTRUCTION AND TAXIED TO THE WRONG RWY. EVIDENTLY, GND CLRED ME TO RWY 34R. JUST PRIOR TO MY DEP, I HAD OBSERVED PLANES LNDG TO THE S ON RWYS 16L&R, SO EVEN THOUGH MY INSTRUCTIONS WERE TO RWY 34R, I WAS THINKING RWY 16. DURING MY TAXI TO RWY 16, NOTHING WAS SAID FROM GND CTL AND THERE WAS NOT ANY TFC AROUND. SO, AFTER MY RUN-UP, TWR ASKED ME WHERE I WAS. I SAID I WAS NEAR THE RWY AND HE SAID I HAD TAXIED TO THE WRONG RWY. I ASKED HIM IF I COULD DEPART RWY 16L AND TWR SAID YES, AND HE CLRED ME FOR TKOF ON RWY 16L. THERE WAS NOT ANY CONFLICT WITH OTHER TFC. I HAD SIMPLY MISUNDERSTOOD THE TAXI INSTRUCTION BECAUSE OF MY EARLIER VISUAL OBSERVATION OF TFC ARRIVING AND DEPARTING TO S. I LEARNED A GOOD LESSON: BE MORE ATTENTIVE TO CTLR INSTRUCTIONS.
