Narrative:
After landing on runway 10, I exited the highspd taxiway A2. While on the highspd taxiway and already clear of the runway, the tower instructed us to exit at taxiway A3, the next taxiway down field. We told tower we were unable. The tower asked us if it was normal for us to exit the runway without instructions. I told him our company part one instructs us to exit at the first available taxiway or a taxiway that ATC instructs the crew to use. In this case, the instructions to use a particular taxiway were received too late to comply.
