Narrative:
Cleared visual approach to runway 25R at lax at 10 NM range out. At approximately 8 SM, socal called air carrier B737 on visual approach to runway 25L. When told we had the air carrier in sight, socal approach said 'you're cleared visual approach runway 25R, B737 is cleared visual to the left (runway 25L), pull up alongside -- do not pass, maintain visual separation, contact tower.' I told socal we would keep speed up to the runway, but was unable to accept 'pull up along side -- do not pass' -- it's a clearance to fly formation prohibited by far part 121. Socal used this terminology yrs ago. Alpa got ATC to drop it. It's nonstandard ATC terminology, unsafe and improper traffic flow management. Looks like it's coming back. Lax ATIS information: 240 degrees 11 KTS, 10 SM clear, 24/17, altimeter 29.87. Simultaneous ILS approachs north progress to runways 24R and 25L or vector for visual approach will be provided. Simultaneous visual approachs to all runways are in progress.

Title: LAX APCH CTLR INSTRUCTS PLT CONDUCTING A VISUAL APCH TO 'PULL UP ALONGSIDE AND DO NOT PASS' CLRNC.
Narrative: CLRED VISUAL APCH TO RWY 25R AT LAX AT 10 NM RANGE OUT. AT APPROX 8 SM, SOCAL CALLED ACR B737 ON VISUAL APCH TO RWY 25L. WHEN TOLD WE HAD THE ACR IN SIGHT, SOCAL APCH SAID 'YOU'RE CLRED VISUAL APCH RWY 25R, B737 IS CLRED VISUAL TO THE L (RWY 25L), PULL UP ALONGSIDE -- DO NOT PASS, MAINTAIN VISUAL SEPARATION, CONTACT TWR.' I TOLD SOCAL WE WOULD KEEP SPD UP TO THE RWY, BUT WAS UNABLE TO ACCEPT 'PULL UP ALONG SIDE -- DO NOT PASS' -- IT'S A CLRNC TO FLY FORMATION PROHIBITED BY FAR PART 121. SOCAL USED THIS TERMINOLOGY YRS AGO. ALPA GOT ATC TO DROP IT. IT'S NONSTANDARD ATC TERMINOLOGY, UNSAFE AND IMPROPER TFC FLOW MGMNT. LOOKS LIKE IT'S COMING BACK. LAX ATIS INFO: 240 DEGS 11 KTS, 10 SM CLR, 24/17, ALTIMETER 29.87. SIMULTANEOUS ILS APCHS N PROGRESS TO RWYS 24R AND 25L OR VECTOR FOR VISUAL APCH WILL BE PROVIDED. SIMULTANEOUS VISUAL APCHS TO ALL RWYS ARE IN PROGRESS.
