Narrative:

VFR training flight close to class B airspace. The student was under the hood (instrument reference) and instructor was demonstrating instrument flying. After 20 seconds (estimated) of time teaching straight and level flight, instructor looked up and scanned from left to right. The converging plane was spotted at the 2 O'clock position and headed southeast. We were headed wsw at 3000 ft, listening to an uncontrolled field CTAF (122.7) with the volume turned down to minimum, but still audible. The other aircraft was descending to avoid us. This flight began with minimal preflight discussion over simulated instrument flying. This lack of discussion contributed to the near midair collision.

Title: C172 FLC HAS NMAC DURING TRAINING FLT.

Narrative: VFR TRAINING FLT CLOSE TO CLASS B AIRSPACE. THE STUDENT WAS UNDER THE HOOD (INST REF) AND INSTRUCTOR WAS DEMONSTRATING INST FLYING. AFTER 20 SECONDS (ESTIMATED) OF TIME TEACHING STRAIGHT AND LEVEL FLT, INSTRUCTOR LOOKED UP AND SCANNED FROM L TO R. THE CONVERGING PLANE WAS SPOTTED AT THE 2 O'CLOCK POS AND HEADED SE. WE WERE HEADED WSW AT 3000 FT, LISTENING TO AN UNCTLED FIELD CTAF (122.7) WITH THE VOLUME TURNED DOWN TO MINIMUM, BUT STILL AUDIBLE. THE OTHER ACFT WAS DSNDING TO AVOID US. THIS FLT BEGAN WITH MINIMAL PREFLT DISCUSSION OVER SIMULATED INST FLYING. THIS LACK OF DISCUSSION CONTRIBUTED TO THE NMAC.
