Narrative:
Shortly after takeoff, the flight attendants reported smoke in the cabin and smelled something burning. This report occurred at the same time the battery charger light illuminated on the annunciator panel followed by the battery charger circuit breaker tripping. Once the circuit breaker had tripped, the smoke and fumes in the cabin began to dissipate. Also, the cabin lighting system along with the first class galley lighting system became inoperative. In accordance with DC9 bulletin DC9-xx, I decided to return to dfw airport which had convective activity in the vicinity. An emergency was declared, and ZFW notified fw dispatch. Additionally, the passenger reported that the aircraft may have been struck by lightning while on approach to dfw. A normal overweight landing was made at a gross weight of 135600 pounds, using medium automatic braking in accordance with FM part 1 -- section yy. Dfw safety equipment followed the aircraft to the gate.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN MD80 CREW, SHORTLY AFTER TKOF FROM DFW, EXPERIENCED SMOKE IN THE CABIN.
Narrative: SHORTLY AFTER TKOF, THE FLT ATTENDANTS RPTED SMOKE IN THE CABIN AND SMELLED SOMETHING BURNING. THIS RPT OCCURRED AT THE SAME TIME THE BATTERY CHARGER LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE ANNUNCIATOR PANEL FOLLOWED BY THE BATTERY CHARGER CIRCUIT BREAKER TRIPPING. ONCE THE CIRCUIT BREAKER HAD TRIPPED, THE SMOKE AND FUMES IN THE CABIN BEGAN TO DISSIPATE. ALSO, THE CABIN LIGHTING SYS ALONG WITH THE FIRST CLASS GALLEY LIGHTING SYS BECAME INOP. IN ACCORDANCE WITH DC9 BULLETIN DC9-XX, I DECIDED TO RETURN TO DFW ARPT WHICH HAD CONVECTIVE ACTIVITY IN THE VICINITY. AN EMER WAS DECLARED, AND ZFW NOTIFIED FW DISPATCH. ADDITIONALLY, THE PAX RPTED THAT THE ACFT MAY HAVE BEEN STRUCK BY LIGHTNING WHILE ON APCH TO DFW. A NORMAL OVERWT LNDG WAS MADE AT A GROSS WT OF 135600 LBS, USING MEDIUM AUTO BRAKING IN ACCORDANCE WITH FM PART 1 -- SECTION YY. DFW SAFETY EQUIP FOLLOWED THE ACFT TO THE GATE.
