Narrative:
Upon entering the ramp area between terminals X and Y at ewr, the flight crew noticed a strong rubber smoke odor. At the same time, ramp control notified the crew via radio that there was significant smoke and a piece of wood lodged between the right main landing gear tires. Fire trucks were requested, but ramp personnel immediately put out the smoke with portable bottles. The passenger deplaned via the aft air stairs and were transported to the terminal via busses. Maintenance and port authority/authorized personnel then took charge of the scene. Possible taxiway incursion. Wood idented as taxiway barricade. Recommendation: better taxiway markings at the intersection of txwys U and a at ewr. Specifically, centerline marking.
