Narrative:
We contacted isp clearance delivery and advised them of our VFR request for flight following to ack. We were given a discrete code and altitude. We departed isp at approximately PM00 oct/sun/02 on a VFR part 91 flight. We contacted departure and then ZNY as instructed. We were given a climb to requested altitude 15500 ft. The next controller told us to level at 11500 ft for opposite direction traffic. We told center that we had traffic on TCASII and then visually. We were told to contact ZBW and a climb to 15500 ft was given. An uneventful landing at ack was accomplished. I was contacted by the farmingdale, ny, FSDO 2 days later about a near miss investigation.
