Narrative:
I was given 3 mins to depart on IFR 'void if not off by' clearance. When I contacted departure (bhm) after takeoff, I was told I was 1 1/2 mins late. I thought I needed to be airborne by departure time, but apparently I was expected to contact departure by 'void if not off by' time.

Narrative: I WAS GIVEN 3 MINS TO DEPART ON IFR 'VOID IF NOT OFF BY' CLRNC. WHEN I CONTACTED DEP (BHM) AFTER TKOF, I WAS TOLD I WAS 1 1/2 MINS LATE. I THOUGHT I NEEDED TO BE AIRBORNE BY DEP TIME, BUT APPARENTLY I WAS EXPECTED TO CONTACT DEP BY 'VOID IF NOT OFF BY' TIME.
