Narrative:
I pulled up at taxiway G for a runway 36 departure, stopping on the centerline. There were 2 aircraft in the landing pattern for runway 36. I called the tower and said 'holding short at taxiway G,' and the controller replied 'hold short, landing traffic,' which I read back. As the first landing aircraft was rolling out, the controller instructed him to 'turn left when able.' I realized that this would be on taxiway G, which I was blocking, so I pulled forward in a dogleg to the right making room for the other aircraft to exit, which he did. In doing so, I crossed the hold short line. At this time, the second landing aircraft was on short final, and was told to 'go around, traffic on the runway.' I was then instructed to maneuver back behind the hold short line, which I did. The controller told the other aircraft to land if able, which he declined and said he would come around again. At this point I was cleared for takeoff, and instructed to call the tower when I got back, which I did. How could this be prevented? 1) stop on the right side of the taxiway. 2) hold my position and force the other aircraft to continue to taxiway D (next taxiway), possibly causing a go around by the second landing aircraft. 3) stop using the txwys for both entry and exit to the runway simultaneously. What did I learn: do not cross hold short until cleared for any reason.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: POTENTIAL GND CONFLICT WHEN A C172 PLT CROSSES THE HOLD SHORT LINE AND CAUSES A C207 TO GO AROUND ON DIRECTIONS FROM THE TWR CTLR AT BET, AK.
Narrative: I PULLED UP AT TXWY G FOR A RWY 36 DEP, STOPPING ON THE CTRLINE. THERE WERE 2 ACFT IN THE LNDG PATTERN FOR RWY 36. I CALLED THE TWR AND SAID 'HOLDING SHORT AT TXWY G,' AND THE CTLR REPLIED 'HOLD SHORT, LNDG TFC,' WHICH I READ BACK. AS THE FIRST LNDG ACFT WAS ROLLING OUT, THE CTLR INSTRUCTED HIM TO 'TURN L WHEN ABLE.' I REALIZED THAT THIS WOULD BE ON TXWY G, WHICH I WAS BLOCKING, SO I PULLED FORWARD IN A DOGLEG TO THE R MAKING ROOM FOR THE OTHER ACFT TO EXIT, WHICH HE DID. IN DOING SO, I CROSSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE. AT THIS TIME, THE SECOND LNDG ACFT WAS ON SHORT FINAL, AND WAS TOLD TO 'GO AROUND, TFC ON THE RWY.' I WAS THEN INSTRUCTED TO MANEUVER BACK BEHIND THE HOLD SHORT LINE, WHICH I DID. THE CTLR TOLD THE OTHER ACFT TO LAND IF ABLE, WHICH HE DECLINED AND SAID HE WOULD COME AROUND AGAIN. AT THIS POINT I WAS CLRED FOR TKOF, AND INSTRUCTED TO CALL THE TWR WHEN I GOT BACK, WHICH I DID. HOW COULD THIS BE PREVENTED? 1) STOP ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE TXWY. 2) HOLD MY POS AND FORCE THE OTHER ACFT TO CONTINUE TO TXWY D (NEXT TXWY), POSSIBLY CAUSING A GAR BY THE SECOND LNDG ACFT. 3) STOP USING THE TXWYS FOR BOTH ENTRY AND EXIT TO THE RWY SIMULTANEOUSLY. WHAT DID I LEARN: DO NOT CROSS HOLD SHORT UNTIL CLRED FOR ANY REASON.
