Narrative:
On visual approach to slc, upon putting landing gear down, did not get any gear light indication on left main. Due to close proximity to ground, elected to go around and check out the problem at a safe altitude. Upon checking the lights via test, found bulbs burned out. Replaced 1 bulb, got good indication and returned for uneventful landing. Since the reason for the go around was related to the landing gear, the tower reported it to the FAA as a landing gear problem. Since the problem was just a burned out bulb, we did not make a logbook entry. Upon landing, FAA inquired about the gear problem and found nothing in the logbook. Please pass on to readers that anytime something happens in the air, they might want to consider a logbook entry, no matter what the problem is. FAA wants details.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN MD90 CREW, ON APCH TO SLC, EXPERIENCED THE LACK OF PROPER 'DOWN AND LOCKED' INDICATIONS UPON GEAR EXTENSION.
Narrative: ON VISUAL APCH TO SLC, UPON PUTTING LNDG GEAR DOWN, DID NOT GET ANY GEAR LIGHT INDICATION ON L MAIN. DUE TO CLOSE PROX TO GND, ELECTED TO GO AROUND AND CHK OUT THE PROB AT A SAFE ALT. UPON CHKING THE LIGHTS VIA TEST, FOUND BULBS BURNED OUT. REPLACED 1 BULB, GOT GOOD INDICATION AND RETURNED FOR UNEVENTFUL LNDG. SINCE THE REASON FOR THE GAR WAS RELATED TO THE LNDG GEAR, THE TWR RPTED IT TO THE FAA AS A LNDG GEAR PROB. SINCE THE PROB WAS JUST A BURNED OUT BULB, WE DID NOT MAKE A LOGBOOK ENTRY. UPON LNDG, FAA INQUIRED ABOUT THE GEAR PROB AND FOUND NOTHING IN THE LOGBOOK. PLEASE PASS ON TO READERS THAT ANYTIME SOMETHING HAPPENS IN THE AIR, THEY MIGHT WANT TO CONSIDER A LOGBOOK ENTRY, NO MATTER WHAT THE PROB IS. FAA WANTS DETAILS.
