Narrative:
Landed runway 34 at ric. Both the captain and myself understood our clearance for taxi was 'left on taxiway C, stay with me.' after completing the after landing checklist, I looked up and to the right and said 'clear right,' just before crossing runway 2. This made the captain and me look to the left for traffic. We both saw a regional jet landing runway 2. Captain stopped our aircraft, but we had crossed the hold short line on taxiway C at runway 2. I then advised the local controller that we were holding short of runway 2. The controller's response was 'for good reason.' I stated that we were not instructed to hold short of runway 2. The controller said that we were cleared to hold short. Contributing factors: the regional jet was having radio problems. The controller gave the rj light gun signals for landing. We heard this after the rj had landed.

Title: MD88 FLT CREW HAS RWY INCURSION AT RIC.
Narrative: LANDED RWY 34 AT RIC. BOTH THE CAPT AND MYSELF UNDERSTOOD OUR CLRNC FOR TAXI WAS 'L ON TXWY C, STAY WITH ME.' AFTER COMPLETING THE AFTER LNDG CHKLIST, I LOOKED UP AND TO THE R AND SAID 'CLR R,' JUST BEFORE XING RWY 2. THIS MADE THE CAPT AND ME LOOK TO THE L FOR TFC. WE BOTH SAW A REGIONAL JET LNDG RWY 2. CAPT STOPPED OUR ACFT, BUT WE HAD CROSSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE ON TXWY C AT RWY 2. I THEN ADVISED THE LCL CTLR THAT WE WERE HOLDING SHORT OF RWY 2. THE CTLR'S RESPONSE WAS 'FOR GOOD REASON.' I STATED THAT WE WERE NOT INSTRUCTED TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 2. THE CTLR SAID THAT WE WERE CLRED TO HOLD SHORT. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: THE REGIONAL JET WAS HAVING RADIO PROBS. THE CTLR GAVE THE RJ LIGHT GUN SIGNALS FOR LNDG. WE HEARD THIS AFTER THE RJ HAD LANDED.
