Narrative:
I noticed a burning smell and it wasn't coming from my first class galley. I walked aft through first class into main cabin and it seemed to dissipate about 1/2 way back. On my way back to first class, I noticed a grayish haze forming in the cabin, so I called the captain. He said he would 'try something' and to let him know if the smoke got better or worse. A few moments later, the aft lavatories' smoke detectors started to ring and the cabin was filling with more smoke. Called the captain to inform and he advised we were 40 mi from ord and would be landing very soon. Crew prepared cabin for landing, all the while captain was asking for report of smoke in cabin. I was happy to report that the smoke had started to finally dissipate and cabin was stable. We landed without incident and followed to the gate by fire equipment. Passenger and crew changed gates and continued our flight to jfk. My hat is off to our captain -- he did a wonderful job for us and the passenger.
