Narrative:
I was aboard the aircraft, not acting as PIC and not flying the aircraft. The pilot landed gear up at pie airport. I observed the PIC going through the downwind checklist and the turn to final checklist. He was doing local pattern work and at the time the gear up landing was made he was doing a short field set-up for landing. No injuries were incurred. Minor damage to aircraft. High density local traffic was observed at the time the pilot was cleared by the tower to land and was a probable factor in distracting the pilot's attention. Multiple runways were in use at the time. Further diligence on the part of the PIC in all phases of operation is recommended.
