Narrative:
Chicago-palwaukee tower/ground (combined) cleared us to 'taxi north, hold short of taxiway a, for a planned runway 34 departure.' no particular route specified. The shortest and in my experience, most common route to runway 34 is via runway 12/30 and taxiway a. Without questioning the clearance, I proceeded off the (FBO) ramp towards runway 30 which was approximately 100 ft from where we were parked. Upon reaching the runway environment the controller asked if we had room to turn around and reenter the ramp area because they wanted to land an aircraft on runway 30. We did turn and reenter the ramp and were further instructed to proceed north on the ramp to intercept taxiway a at another point. Fortunately, traffic was light, spacing was not compromised and the controller made no further comment. Nevertheless, this could have been an accident in the making. I should have verified the desired routing before moving the airplane, particularly when involving the use of a runway for taxi. In the future I will.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A PLT RECEIVES A CLRNC TO ACTIVE RWY WITHOUT RTE INSTRUCTIONS AND TAXIES ON ANOTHER RWY.
Narrative: CHICAGO-PALWAUKEE TWR/GND (COMBINED) CLRED US TO 'TAXI N, HOLD SHORT OF TXWY A, FOR A PLANNED RWY 34 DEP.' NO PARTICULAR RTE SPECIFIED. THE SHORTEST AND IN MY EXPERIENCE, MOST COMMON RTE TO RWY 34 IS VIA RWY 12/30 AND TXWY A. WITHOUT QUESTIONING THE CLRNC, I PROCEEDED OFF THE (FBO) RAMP TOWARDS RWY 30 WHICH WAS APPROX 100 FT FROM WHERE WE WERE PARKED. UPON REACHING THE RWY ENVIRONMENT THE CTLR ASKED IF WE HAD ROOM TO TURN AROUND AND REENTER THE RAMP AREA BECAUSE THEY WANTED TO LAND AN ACFT ON RWY 30. WE DID TURN AND REENTER THE RAMP AND WERE FURTHER INSTRUCTED TO PROCEED N ON THE RAMP TO INTERCEPT TXWY A AT ANOTHER POINT. FORTUNATELY, TFC WAS LIGHT, SPACING WAS NOT COMPROMISED AND THE CTLR MADE NO FURTHER COMMENT. NEVERTHELESS, THIS COULD HAVE BEEN AN ACCIDENT IN THE MAKING. I SHOULD HAVE VERIFIED THE DESIRED ROUTING BEFORE MOVING THE AIRPLANE, PARTICULARLY WHEN INVOLVING THE USE OF A RWY FOR TAXI. IN THE FUTURE I WILL.
