Narrative:
Approaching cgx, chicago approach asked what type of approach we wanted. We had misplaced the VOR approach and could not find it. Our GPS would not accept the GPS waypoints for the GPS approach. Due to these factors, we could only execute the visual approach to cgx. The approach controller inquired as to why we could not execute a published approach and seemed to infer that we filed IFR to an airport without approach information -- this is clearly not the case. The approach controller cleared us to 2000 ft MSL for the visual approach. We had ground contact below the clouds with 5 mi visibility. Approximately 5 mi from cgx, the controller asked us to state our intentions. We did not have the field and asked to divert to our filed alternate of mdw. In the future, I will ensure that my FMS will accept the planned GPS approach data, prior to departure.

Title: LJ31 FLC ADVISES C90 CTLR THAT THEY DO NOT HAVE APCH CHARTS TO ARPT OF INTENDED LNDG AND, DUE TO LCL WX, DIVERT TO ANOTHER ARPT.
Narrative: APCHING CGX, CHICAGO APCH ASKED WHAT TYPE OF APCH WE WANTED. WE HAD MISPLACED THE VOR APCH AND COULD NOT FIND IT. OUR GPS WOULD NOT ACCEPT THE GPS WAYPOINTS FOR THE GPS APCH. DUE TO THESE FACTORS, WE COULD ONLY EXECUTE THE VISUAL APCH TO CGX. THE APCH CTLR INQUIRED AS TO WHY WE COULD NOT EXECUTE A PUBLISHED APCH AND SEEMED TO INFER THAT WE FILED IFR TO AN ARPT WITHOUT APCH INFO -- THIS IS CLRLY NOT THE CASE. THE APCH CTLR CLRED US TO 2000 FT MSL FOR THE VISUAL APCH. WE HAD GND CONTACT BELOW THE CLOUDS WITH 5 MI VISIBILITY. APPROX 5 MI FROM CGX, THE CTLR ASKED US TO STATE OUR INTENTIONS. WE DID NOT HAVE THE FIELD AND ASKED TO DIVERT TO OUR FILED ALTERNATE OF MDW. IN THE FUTURE, I WILL ENSURE THAT MY FMS WILL ACCEPT THE PLANNED GPS APCH DATA, PRIOR TO DEP.
