Narrative:
Location: elp airport. An early am departure at XA10 local. WX cavu. Airfield devoid of any activity. Cleared to taxi to runway 22, I requested runway 8 as our route was east to dfw. Winds calm. Ground cleared us to taxi to runway 8 via taxiway J. As there was no other movement or audio traffic, I commenced taxi. Anticipating taxi via taxiway K. I glanced on my airport diagram to look for taxiway J. Not finding it readily on the diagram, I looked outside to see I was approaching taxiway J, made the turn and found myself on the extended end of runway 8. Immediately, I sensed something wrong as ground directed me off the runway for an aircraft inbound on the reciprocal runway 26L, approximately 5 mi out. I taxied off the runway and turned around and held short on taxiway K. The aircraft was just coming into sight, though it did not make me feel any better finding myself in this position. I accept full responsibility for my fault but believe this may be a gotcha that may have happened, or will happen to another. The active part of runway 8 is just behind the a terminal, only 2 quick turns away. Also, taxiway J is not easily detected on the airport diagram. The only alpha listing is on the other side, north of runway 8/26L. Finally, turning onto taxiway J puts oneself directly on the runway. The term,' taxi to runway 8 via taxiway J', implies taxiing on taxiway J is intended.
