Narrative:
Departing lax runway 25R. Clearance: runway heading until crossing smo 160 degree radial, then left turn to 220 degrees, then vectors to departure fix. Climb to 3000 ft. All checklists complete and my personal comparison of gyro heading and runway heading -- cleared for takeoff. Takeoff normal and shortly after gear retraction, I noticed a gyro heading of 230 degrees and started to correct back to 250 degrees. Almost immediately, my first officer said I was drifting right of centerline and I started to correct back visually to avoid runway 24 takeoff corridor. At the same time socal departure gave me a heading back on course. I realized that my gyro had preceded 20 degrees and corrected the gyro problem by matching compass, first officer's gyro and my gyro, but socal departure felt my deviation on departure profile warranted investigation and they gave me a phone number to call upon reaching my destination. I made the call and explained the situation, but I had gotten too close to a jet on runway 24 that was just lifting off that a report would have to be filed. No TA or RA on TCASII.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: LAX RWY 25R DEP, GYRO PROBS, CONFLICTS WITH RWY 24 DEPS.
Narrative: DEPARTING LAX RWY 25R. CLRNC: RWY HDG UNTIL XING SMO 160 DEG RADIAL, THEN L TURN TO 220 DEGS, THEN VECTORS TO DEP FIX. CLB TO 3000 FT. ALL CHKLISTS COMPLETE AND MY PERSONAL COMPARISON OF GYRO HDG AND RWY HDG -- CLRED FOR TKOF. TKOF NORMAL AND SHORTLY AFTER GEAR RETRACTION, I NOTICED A GYRO HDG OF 230 DEGS AND STARTED TO CORRECT BACK TO 250 DEGS. ALMOST IMMEDIATELY, MY FO SAID I WAS DRIFTING R OF CTRLINE AND I STARTED TO CORRECT BACK VISUALLY TO AVOID RWY 24 TKOF CORRIDOR. AT THE SAME TIME SOCAL DEP GAVE ME A HDG BACK ON COURSE. I REALIZED THAT MY GYRO HAD PRECEDED 20 DEGS AND CORRECTED THE GYRO PROB BY MATCHING COMPASS, FO'S GYRO AND MY GYRO, BUT SOCAL DEP FELT MY DEV ON DEP PROFILE WARRANTED INVESTIGATION AND THEY GAVE ME A PHONE NUMBER TO CALL UPON REACHING MY DEST. I MADE THE CALL AND EXPLAINED THE SIT, BUT I HAD GOTTEN TOO CLOSE TO A JET ON RWY 24 THAT WAS JUST LIFTING OFF THAT A RPT WOULD HAVE TO BE FILED. NO TA OR RA ON TCASII.
