Narrative:
We were cleared to taxi to runway 30L via runway 3. As we taxied down runway 3, the copilot was briefing me on the alamo departure so his head was down the whole time. Since we were taxiing on a runway, I did not see any runway sign to alert me to the approach end of runway 30L. We have departed from this position before but for some reason I did not see the runway until we were starting across it. Then we saw a B737 doing a go around so it was quicker to continue to the other side of the runway rather than stop in the middle. I have decided that an important element of this incident was having the copilot's eyes down reading the departure during taxi. The other element is, of course, the nonstandard taxi procedure of using the runway. Because this runway T's into the runway we were on, it was not visible until we were very close. If I had been more vigilant, I would have seen it well in advance, but I was distraction by our briefing.
