Narrative:
I was returning from the salt lake area to ykm. Received the following IFR clearance -- cleared ykm via salt lake 8 departure -- V101 -- maltt -- direct twin falls as filed. Climb and maintain 10000 ft. Programmed the flight plan into the garmin 430 prior to taxi. Departed runway 35 and was reminded to fly heading 340 degrees as per SL8 departure. Around 8000 ft MSL, saw some clouds ahead, 9,000-11000 ft and asked to continue climb to 12000 ft. Entered IMC approximately 9500 ft. The controller was apparently not able to provide higher, but issued 'proceed direct ogden, join V101.' reached down to the garmin and entered 'direct odg' and switched the autoplt from heading mode to navigation/GPS mode. Ogden is ogd not odg. Was IMC didn't catch the mistake. Should have been heading northwest and was turning east instead. The controller responded within a min that there was a terrain warning on his system and gave me an immediate vector back to the northwest. Assumed I had turned too early or he had vectored me incorrectly, not that I was going the wrong way. Once on the assigned course, the controller again gave me direct ogden, and since it was still up on the garmin, I hit direct again, which was still set on odg. Immediately the controller responded that I was heading for terrain and asked if I knew where ogden was. I looked down and noticed my mistake, quickly corrected it, and proceeded direct ogd. I was expecting radar vectors to join V101 between slc and maltt and didn't have ogd in my thought process. Should have just scrolled to the flp portion and selected ogd rather than try to enter it while in IMC. Wrongly assumed I had gone by ogden somehow and was being turned east by the controller. Should have been more aware of my location and direction of flight. Probably 101 ways to identify ogden in my plane and somehow I came up with enid, ok.

Title: INCORRECT GPS FLT PLAN ENTRY BY LOW EXPERIENCED SMA CIRRUS PLT RESULTS IN A S56 TERRAIN ALERT DUE TO INCORRECT FLOWN COURSE BEFORE BEING CORRECTED BY PLT AFTER DEPING SLC.
Narrative: I WAS RETURNING FROM THE SALT LAKE AREA TO YKM. RECEIVED THE FOLLOWING IFR CLRNC -- CLRED YKM VIA SALT LAKE 8 DEP -- V101 -- MALTT -- DIRECT TWIN FALLS AS FILED. CLB AND MAINTAIN 10000 FT. PROGRAMMED THE FLT PLAN INTO THE GARMIN 430 PRIOR TO TAXI. DEPARTED RWY 35 AND WAS REMINDED TO FLY HDG 340 DEGS AS PER SL8 DEP. AROUND 8000 FT MSL, SAW SOME CLOUDS AHEAD, 9,000-11000 FT AND ASKED TO CONTINUE CLB TO 12000 FT. ENTERED IMC APPROX 9500 FT. THE CTLR WAS APPARENTLY NOT ABLE TO PROVIDE HIGHER, BUT ISSUED 'PROCEED DIRECT OGDEN, JOIN V101.' REACHED DOWN TO THE GARMIN AND ENTERED 'DIRECT ODG' AND SWITCHED THE AUTOPLT FROM HDG MODE TO NAV/GPS MODE. OGDEN IS OGD NOT ODG. WAS IMC DIDN'T CATCH THE MISTAKE. SHOULD HAVE BEEN HEADING NW AND WAS TURNING E INSTEAD. THE CTLR RESPONDED WITHIN A MIN THAT THERE WAS A TERRAIN WARNING ON HIS SYS AND GAVE ME AN IMMEDIATE VECTOR BACK TO THE NW. ASSUMED I HAD TURNED TOO EARLY OR HE HAD VECTORED ME INCORRECTLY, NOT THAT I WAS GOING THE WRONG WAY. ONCE ON THE ASSIGNED COURSE, THE CTLR AGAIN GAVE ME DIRECT OGDEN, AND SINCE IT WAS STILL UP ON THE GARMIN, I HIT DIRECT AGAIN, WHICH WAS STILL SET ON ODG. IMMEDIATELY THE CTLR RESPONDED THAT I WAS HEADING FOR TERRAIN AND ASKED IF I KNEW WHERE OGDEN WAS. I LOOKED DOWN AND NOTICED MY MISTAKE, QUICKLY CORRECTED IT, AND PROCEEDED DIRECT OGD. I WAS EXPECTING RADAR VECTORS TO JOIN V101 BTWN SLC AND MALTT AND DIDN'T HAVE OGD IN MY THOUGHT PROCESS. SHOULD HAVE JUST SCROLLED TO THE FLP PORTION AND SELECTED OGD RATHER THAN TRY TO ENTER IT WHILE IN IMC. WRONGLY ASSUMED I HAD GONE BY OGDEN SOMEHOW AND WAS BEING TURNED E BY THE CTLR. SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE AWARE OF MY LOCATION AND DIRECTION OF FLT. PROBABLY 101 WAYS TO IDENT OGDEN IN MY PLANE AND SOMEHOW I CAME UP WITH ENID, OK.
