Narrative:
We departed sjc on a repositioning flight (pt 91) to hwd under VFR. Approaching hwd, we noticed that the MIRL were out. However, the VASI lights for this runway (runway 28L) were on, and the AWOS gave no indication of runway closure. (Runway 28R was lit, but was too short for us.) we landed on runway 28L with no incident. After landing, we learned that runway 28L was indeed closed due to problems with the pilot controled lighting on that runway, and had been closed for several days. I had checked NOTAMS on a commercial terminal at an FBO in hayward that morning, but saw nothing for hwd. The copilot had checked NOTAMS and saw that the pilot controled lighting was out, but saw nothing about runway closure. We did not communication about NOTAMS prior to the flight. What to do differently? I will now get NOTAMS for the FSS prior to each flight, especially if the tower will be closed. The copilot and I will make NOTAMS part of our preflight briefing. Also, the tower should list after hours on the AWOS or recorded ATIS any and all runway closures or put up a lighted X.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A C560 CREW RPTED THAT, LNDG AFTER THE TWR WAS CLOSED, HWD DID NOT DISPLAY AN 'X' INDICATING THAT RWY 28L WAS CLOSED, NOR DID THEY RECORD THIS FACT ON THE ATIS.
Narrative: WE DEPARTED SJC ON A REPOSITIONING FLT (PT 91) TO HWD UNDER VFR. APCHING HWD, WE NOTICED THAT THE MIRL WERE OUT. HOWEVER, THE VASI LIGHTS FOR THIS RWY (RWY 28L) WERE ON, AND THE AWOS GAVE NO INDICATION OF RWY CLOSURE. (RWY 28R WAS LIT, BUT WAS TOO SHORT FOR US.) WE LANDED ON RWY 28L WITH NO INCIDENT. AFTER LNDG, WE LEARNED THAT RWY 28L WAS INDEED CLOSED DUE TO PROBS WITH THE PLT CTLED LIGHTING ON THAT RWY, AND HAD BEEN CLOSED FOR SEVERAL DAYS. I HAD CHKED NOTAMS ON A COMMERCIAL TERMINAL AT AN FBO IN HAYWARD THAT MORNING, BUT SAW NOTHING FOR HWD. THE COPLT HAD CHKED NOTAMS AND SAW THAT THE PLT CTLED LIGHTING WAS OUT, BUT SAW NOTHING ABOUT RWY CLOSURE. WE DID NOT COM ABOUT NOTAMS PRIOR TO THE FLT. WHAT TO DO DIFFERENTLY? I WILL NOW GET NOTAMS FOR THE FSS PRIOR TO EACH FLT, ESPECIALLY IF THE TWR WILL BE CLOSED. THE COPLT AND I WILL MAKE NOTAMS PART OF OUR PREFLT BRIEFING. ALSO, THE TWR SHOULD LIST AFTER HRS ON THE AWOS OR RECORDED ATIS ANY AND ALL RWY CLOSURES OR PUT UP A LIGHTED X.
