Narrative:
Approaching #1 for takeoff at mci runway 1L, tower says the aircraft in front of us reported txwys and runway as poor braking and the painted numbers of runway 1L as nil. The aircraft was a DC9, and we watched him take off. We were given permission to take off, and after getting numbers for an intersection further down the runway, taxied around the painted numbers and took off. It wasn't until our arrival in chicago that I re-thought the event and noticed the book says company aircraft will not take off if any portion of the runway is nil -- even if that portion is behind us. In the future, if I hear 'nil braking,' I will stop the aircraft and try to ascertain exactly what is going on at the airport.
