Narrative:
While descending on the kayoh arrival to sna, we received a terrain warning from the egpws and the corresponding 'whoop, whoop, pull up.' the aircraft was on a 250 degree vector to intercept the arrival at kayoh intersection approximately 10 NM southwest pdz VOR. Aircraft was in the clouds in IMC with a descent clearance to 5000 ft, 190 KTS, flaps 2 degrees, passing 5600 ft at approximately 1500 FPM rate of descent. No indications were present on the navigation display of conflicting terrain. Both pilots had the 'terrain on,' nd-pb selected. Per company procedures, I initiated an immediate go around. The first officer coordinated with socal approach which advised traffic in the vicinity at 6000 ft. The MDA was 5000 ft and once assured the warning was false, we returned to 5000 ft and continued the approach to an uneventful landing. Separation was not a factor.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN A319 FLT CREW GETS AN EGPWS WARNING NEAR KAYOH INTXN WHEN DSNDING TO 5000 FT ON THE KAYOH ARR FOR SNA, CA.
Narrative: WHILE DSNDING ON THE KAYOH ARR TO SNA, WE RECEIVED A TERRAIN WARNING FROM THE EGPWS AND THE CORRESPONDING 'WHOOP, WHOOP, PULL UP.' THE ACFT WAS ON A 250 DEG VECTOR TO INTERCEPT THE ARR AT KAYOH INTXN APPROX 10 NM SW PDZ VOR. ACFT WAS IN THE CLOUDS IN IMC WITH A DSCNT CLRNC TO 5000 FT, 190 KTS, FLAPS 2 DEGS, PASSING 5600 FT AT APPROX 1500 FPM RATE OF DSCNT. NO INDICATIONS WERE PRESENT ON THE NAV DISPLAY OF CONFLICTING TERRAIN. BOTH PLTS HAD THE 'TERRAIN ON,' ND-PB SELECTED. PER COMPANY PROCS, I INITIATED AN IMMEDIATE GAR. THE FO COORDINATED WITH SOCAL APCH WHICH ADVISED TFC IN THE VICINITY AT 6000 FT. THE MDA WAS 5000 FT AND ONCE ASSURED THE WARNING WAS FALSE, WE RETURNED TO 5000 FT AND CONTINUED THE APCH TO AN UNEVENTFUL LNDG. SEPARATION WAS NOT A FACTOR.
