Narrative:
We arrived in ZZZ operations to do our preflight. We observed a previous write-up concerning the wheel well fire indicator. It was cleared by maintenance operations, checks normal. En route to sfo at said location, we experienced a wheel well fire indication, and we complied with the checklist, we declared an emergency. Had the flight attendants prepare for an evacuate/evacuation. Mei was the closest airport. We flew an ILS to runway 1 and made an uneventful landing. Mei crash fire rescue equipment inspected the airplane for fire. There was none, and we were cleared to taxi to the airline parking area. We contacted dispatch by phone. We had a 3-WAY call dispatch/maintenance operations, and we discussed our options. We were told by maintenance operations that the aircraft could be dispatched with the fire indicator MEL'ed. We agreed with this recommendation, and we started the process of redispatch. We were faxed the MEL card, WX, flight plan/performance, and were instructed on how to comply with the MEL. We refueled and departed for sfo. Landing was uneventful.
