Air Traffic Incident | Operational Error |
Narrative:
After departure clearance, we were instructed to contact tower (119.1) for taxi. Aircraft were landing on runway 9L, runway 9R, runway 13. We were told to taxi to runway 27R. This was 1) opposite direction of the air carrier traffic rolling runway 9L 2) in direct and immediate opposition to a large jet in the taxiway. 3) opposite direction for prevailing winds, which were 5-10 KTS or stronger. I stopped within the 'no fuel' area of the customs facility, realizing an error had occurred. I recontacted the tower and was asked 'are you ready to taxi yet, guess not?' I replied ready to taxi, and was given runway 9R. Within the next min, a B757 was told to land runway 9R. This is not a long enough runway for air carrier's to operation on! The controller caught that err. In the space of 3 mins, the tower controller jeopardized an SR22, jet and 1 or 2 B757/B767 aircraft.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: RPTR STATES THAT ATCT CTLR AT PBI XMITTED SEVERAL FLAWED CLRNCS IN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. AT THE TIME THE CTLR WAS PROVIDING SVC ON BOTH GND AND TWR FREQS.
Narrative: AFTER DEP CLRNC, WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO CONTACT TWR (119.1) FOR TAXI. ACFT WERE LNDG ON RWY 9L, RWY 9R, RWY 13. WE WERE TOLD TO TAXI TO RWY 27R. THIS WAS 1) OPPOSITE DIRECTION OF THE ACR TFC ROLLING RWY 9L 2) IN DIRECT AND IMMEDIATE OPPOSITION TO A LARGE JET IN THE TXWY. 3) OPPOSITE DIRECTION FOR PREVAILING WINDS, WHICH WERE 5-10 KTS OR STRONGER. I STOPPED WITHIN THE 'NO FUEL' AREA OF THE CUSTOMS FACILITY, REALIZING AN ERROR HAD OCCURRED. I RECONTACTED THE TWR AND WAS ASKED 'ARE YOU READY TO TAXI YET, GUESS NOT?' I REPLIED READY TO TAXI, AND WAS GIVEN RWY 9R. WITHIN THE NEXT MIN, A B757 WAS TOLD TO LAND RWY 9R. THIS IS NOT A LONG ENOUGH RWY FOR ACR'S TO OP ON! THE CTLR CAUGHT THAT ERR. IN THE SPACE OF 3 MINS, THE TWR CTLR JEOPARDIZED AN SR22, JET AND 1 OR 2 B757/B767 ACFT.
