Narrative:
The flight was supposed to be a training flight, but my student showed up with his children and wanted to do a scenic flight instead. I was already at the helicopter when my student arrived, finishing the preflight. We took off and headed from el monte toward santa monica. My first mistake, which could have prevented the whole incident, was not calling FSS for a briefing. I flew down the shoreline from santa monica to long beach. My student told me rather than go to long beach for training, he wanted to continue the scenic flight. We continued down the shoreline to the huntington beach pier, and then turned northbound. I decided to show the kids disneyland from the air on the way back to el monte, completely unaware there was a tfr in effect. When I contacted fullerton tower for a transition through their airspace, they told me about the tfr. It was a mistake that should not have happened, and could have been prevented with 1 simple phone call.
