Narrative:
ZFW controller asked us if we wanted 16000 ft or FL200 or FL230. We were level at assigned altitude of 12000 ft. We stated that we'd take 16000 ft as a final altitude. The ATC controller said 16000 ft is the final. We initiated a climb to 16000 ft. The controller stated 'say altitude.' we were about to pass through 12700 ft, so I stated '12700 ft climbing 16000 ft.' the controller said he didn't clear us yet. Supplemental information from acn 577482: we were leveled off at 12000 ft by center. Our initial final altitude was supposed to be FL230. We determined we hadn't been cleared to 16000 ft. Just asked our preference of altitudes. Should have clarified our clearance, and I'll do so in the future.
