Narrative:
Unable to fully extend gear to over-center lock. Unable to verify status fully. Attempted low approach to feel out gear. 1 (right) gear seemed locked, left was not. After wheel touchdown lightly, gear slowly folded inward toward retracted position. As gear retracted, right stayed on wheel longer than left, so T-51 skidded to left. Skidding was modest in length (less than 100 ft) with no tendency to FLIP or tip. Damage limited to propeller, left wingtip and small sheet metal, and modest underbelly sheet metal damage. No injuries whatsoever. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated the cause of the left main landing gear failure to extend to the down and locked position was the failure of the down and lock microswitch. The reporter said the landing gear retract and extension is hydraulically operated and electrically controled. The reporter stated the electrically driven hydraulic pump shut off when the microswitch failed with the left landing gear not down and locked. The reporter said no contact has been made with the FAA.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A HOMEBUILT TITAN T-51 ON LNDG HAD THE L LNDG GEAR NOT FULLY DOWN AND LOCKED. ON TOUCHDOWN, GEAR FOLDED INWARD DAMAGING ACFT.
Narrative: UNABLE TO FULLY EXTEND GEAR TO OVER-CTR LOCK. UNABLE TO VERIFY STATUS FULLY. ATTEMPTED LOW APCH TO FEEL OUT GEAR. 1 (R) GEAR SEEMED LOCKED, L WAS NOT. AFTER WHEEL TOUCHDOWN LIGHTLY, GEAR SLOWLY FOLDED INWARD TOWARD RETRACTED POS. AS GEAR RETRACTED, R STAYED ON WHEEL LONGER THAN L, SO T-51 SKIDDED TO L. SKIDDING WAS MODEST IN LENGTH (LESS THAN 100 FT) WITH NO TENDENCY TO FLIP OR TIP. DAMAGE LIMITED TO PROP, L WINGTIP AND SMALL SHEET METAL, AND MODEST UNDERBELLY SHEET METAL DAMAGE. NO INJURIES WHATSOEVER. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE CAUSE OF THE L MAIN LNDG GEAR FAILURE TO EXTEND TO THE DOWN AND LOCKED POS WAS THE FAILURE OF THE DOWN AND LOCK MICROSWITCH. THE RPTR SAID THE LNDG GEAR RETRACT AND EXTENSION IS HYDRAULICALLY OPERATED AND ELECTRICALLY CTLED. THE RPTR STATED THE ELECTRICALLY DRIVEN HYD PUMP SHUT OFF WHEN THE MICROSWITCH FAILED WITH THE L LNDG GEAR NOT DOWN AND LOCKED. THE RPTR SAID NO CONTACT HAS BEEN MADE WITH THE FAA.
