Narrative:
I departed from hvn VFR to abe. I climbed to the northwest up to 8500 ft MSL. My intention was to go around the ADIZ around ny. I navigated approximately 5 miles outside the class B airspace according to my GPS. I contacted abe approach at 22 miles to the east of abe. Landed at abe and ground control told me to contact ny approach. When I called ny a very nice male controller told me that I had violated the ADIZ around ny at 8500 ft. I told him that that was me, but that I thought the ADIZ was coincident with the class B airspace. He said that it was not, that it was 30 miles, the same as the mode C veil. I had gotten a briefing that morning and thought I knew the ADIZ. I think my confusion arose because the washington ADIZ is coincident with the class B except for the southern boundary, which is a 30 mile radius. I was fully aware of the requirements of the ADIZ and fully intended to comply with them. It was simply a mental lapse as to the exact boundary location.
