Narrative:
Pushed back off charlotte gate normally. Ramp control told us to taxi to spot X. Then without identing himself told us to follow the 'dash eight.' I followed him and continued to follow him, into controled ground txwys, across runways 5/23, where we discovered our mistake and finally contacted ground. They cleared us to continue taxiing without incident. This is the second time I have been told, by ramp control to follow an aircraft. A cockpit distraction keeps me from realizing the first officer has not called ground control, and I keep following the aircraft that ramp directed me to follow! I am not crazy about our procedures in the handoff between ramp and ground.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: TXWY AND RWY INCURSION WHEN AN A320 FLT CREW FAILS TO CONTACT GND CTLR FOR TAXI CLRNC, FOLLOWING THE COMPANY'S RAMP CTLR'S TAXI INSTRUCTION INSTEAD AT CLT, NC.
Narrative: PUSHED BACK OFF CHARLOTTE GATE NORMALLY. RAMP CTL TOLD US TO TAXI TO SPOT X. THEN WITHOUT IDENTING HIMSELF TOLD US TO FOLLOW THE 'DASH EIGHT.' I FOLLOWED HIM AND CONTINUED TO FOLLOW HIM, INTO CTLED GND TXWYS, ACROSS RWYS 5/23, WHERE WE DISCOVERED OUR MISTAKE AND FINALLY CONTACTED GND. THEY CLRED US TO CONTINUE TAXIING WITHOUT INCIDENT. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME I HAVE BEEN TOLD, BY RAMP CTL TO FOLLOW AN ACFT. A COCKPIT DISTR KEEPS ME FROM REALIZING THE FO HAS NOT CALLED GND CTL, AND I KEEP FOLLOWING THE ACFT THAT RAMP DIRECTED ME TO FOLLOW! I AM NOT CRAZY ABOUT OUR PROCS IN THE HDOF BTWN RAMP AND GND.
