Narrative:
Aircraft returned to block with takeoff green slat light inoperative. Performed MEL 27-00-37 with crew in cockpit. Crew assisted with items on MEL while I was clearing flight controls and communicating with co-worker in cockpit. MEL procedure was completed, logbook signed off and we went back to maintenance shop. During pushback, left engine started and went to takeoff power. To prevent a recurrence, another step should be added to MEL procedure to retract throttles to idle and also for flight crew to go through their checklist. Also, maybe disconnecting towbar and tug before engines are started.
