Narrative:

Aborted takeoff due to captain's seat (PF) sliding back far enough to be unable to control the aircraft. First officer took control at direction of captain. This happened at approximately 80 KTS. The seat slid back 4-5 seat slots. We performed the required checklists and found that checklist states ...captain will assume control of the aircraft... This is not always possible. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the crew was flying an embraer 135 aircraft. Captain indicated he is only 5 ft 6 inches in ht. He adjusts his seat full fwd. He had a very sharp first officer who assumed control of the aircraft during the aborted takeoff. The first officer had just called 80 KTS. Captain states the seat rails have holes that an adjustment pin locks into, similar to those on cessna aircraft. The captain said he has had this happen before, but the seat has only slid back one notch adjustment before locking. This time it slid full back. After the abort, the crew taxied back to the gate. The crew listed the seat problem in the aircraft maintenance log. The company replaced the seat rails with the new 'brown colored' rails. The captain would like to see all aircraft modified with the new rails as soon as possible. The captain has flown cessna aircraft and was aware of their problem. He said the only thing he could think of when the seat was sliding back, was don't pull on the control wheel, over and over again. The captain states the oldest aircraft in the air carrier fleet was delivered in 1997.

THE SEAT SLID BACK 4-5 SEAT SLOTS. WE PERFORMED THE REQUIRED CHKLISTS AND FOUND THAT CHKLIST STATES ...CAPT WILL ASSUME CTL OF THE ACFT... THIS IS NOT ALWAYS POSSIBLE. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE CREW WAS FLYING AN EMBRAER 135 ACFT. CAPT INDICATED HE IS ONLY 5 FT 6 INCHES IN HT. HE ADJUSTS HIS SEAT FULL FWD. HE HAD A VERY SHARP FO WHO ASSUMED CTL OF THE ACFT DURING THE ABORTED TKOF. THE FO HAD JUST CALLED 80 KTS.
