Narrative:
Was cleared into position and hold on runway 28R. I cleared the final approach area, and as I lined up for takeoff, I checked the runway heading and runway for traffic. Seeing none, I believed I was cleared for takeoff, and did so. Upon getting airborne, I noted a 172 sitting at the end of the runway. It had landed from a higher than normal approach, and due to the runway 'hump' was obscured from the approach end. He delayed in the clearing of the runway. There was no actual conflict involved, but when I was airborne, the tower asked what I was doing. I thought I had been cleared, but apparently, wasn't. Many apologies ensued.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT OF SMA TOOK OFF FROM RWY 28R AT MYF WITHOUT TKOF CLRNC. LNDG ACFT STILL ON RWY.
Narrative: WAS CLRED INTO POS AND HOLD ON RWY 28R. I CLRED THE FINAL APCH AREA, AND AS I LINED UP FOR TKOF, I CHKED THE RWY HDG AND RWY FOR TFC. SEEING NONE, I BELIEVED I WAS CLRED FOR TKOF, AND DID SO. UPON GETTING AIRBORNE, I NOTED A 172 SITTING AT THE END OF THE RWY. IT HAD LANDED FROM A HIGHER THAN NORMAL APCH, AND DUE TO THE RWY 'HUMP' WAS OBSCURED FROM THE APCH END. HE DELAYED IN THE CLRING OF THE RWY. THERE WAS NO ACTUAL CONFLICT INVOLVED, BUT WHEN I WAS AIRBORNE, THE TWR ASKED WHAT I WAS DOING. I THOUGHT I HAD BEEN CLRED, BUT APPARENTLY, WASN'T. MANY APOLOGIES ENSUED.
