Narrative:
During takeoff, we experienced an abnormality. While trying to evaluate the abnormality and comply with the departure clearance issued by tower, ATC (tower) told us to fly a 055 degree heading, climb to 10000 ft and contact departure, I read back the clearance, I made the mistake of not contacting departure right away. I read it back in my clearance, but for some reason, it didn't register. I was going to ask tower if he wanted us to switch over to departure, but the frequency was too busy. (Time was lost here waiting for a break in the xmissions.) after climbing to approximately 6000 ft, I switched over to departure myself. We checked in, but did not receive an initial response. Communication was established at 7000 ft. We received a TA and quickly idented the aircraft. We were given a heading and proceeded without incident. In the future, I will concentrate on dividing my attention and try never to miss a handoff again. Supplemental information from acn 580643: after climbing to approximately 6000 ft, we realized tower was extremely busy and we questioned whether he forgot to hand us off.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: POTENTIAL CONFLICT CREATED BY THE LATE CHANGE OVER TO DEP CTLR BY A DEP E145 FLT CREW CLBING OUT OF 6000 FT FROM DTW, MI.
Narrative: DURING TKOF, WE EXPERIENCED AN ABNORMALITY. WHILE TRYING TO EVALUATE THE ABNORMALITY AND COMPLY WITH THE DEP CLRNC ISSUED BY TWR, ATC (TWR) TOLD US TO FLY A 055 DEG HDG, CLB TO 10000 FT AND CONTACT DEP, I READ BACK THE CLRNC, I MADE THE MISTAKE OF NOT CONTACTING DEP RIGHT AWAY. I READ IT BACK IN MY CLRNC, BUT FOR SOME REASON, IT DIDN'T REGISTER. I WAS GOING TO ASK TWR IF HE WANTED US TO SWITCH OVER TO DEP, BUT THE FREQ WAS TOO BUSY. (TIME WAS LOST HERE WAITING FOR A BREAK IN THE XMISSIONS.) AFTER CLBING TO APPROX 6000 FT, I SWITCHED OVER TO DEP MYSELF. WE CHKED IN, BUT DID NOT RECEIVE AN INITIAL RESPONSE. COM WAS ESTABLISHED AT 7000 FT. WE RECEIVED A TA AND QUICKLY IDENTED THE ACFT. WE WERE GIVEN A HEADING AND PROCEEDED WITHOUT INCIDENT. IN THE FUTURE, I WILL CONCENTRATE ON DIVIDING MY ATTN AND TRY NEVER TO MISS A HDOF AGAIN. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 580643: AFTER CLBING TO APPROX 6000 FT, WE REALIZED TWR WAS EXTREMELY BUSY AND WE QUESTIONED WHETHER HE FORGOT TO HAND US OFF.
