Narrative:

Aircraft X came into ZZZ, may/tue/03. Aircraft X had an inbound log write-up, stating that the captain's HSI was missing its present heading marker. I troubleshot the system and determined, that both left and center symbol generators were at fault. Referencing the ipc, and conferring with parts expeditor, it was determined manufacturer part number 622-9436-101 was needed. I ordered 2 each, 622-9436-101 symbol generators. I received 2 each symbol generators at the aircraft. After installing the symbol generators, the inbound problem was cleared. The symbol generators passed their test per the fault isolation manual. At which time, I released the aircraft and returned it to service to continue its flight day. Later, while completing the parts tag, I realized the manufacturer part number that I had installed did not match the part number that I ordered. Our part ordering system is going through a transition. The old system which is based on air traffic area/aircraft type codes is being phased out. The new system is based on manufacturer part numbers. Talking with our stock room, I was told, all 3 manufacturer part numbers were still stocked under the old 341002453 number, instead of the manufacturer part numbers that I installed, or the 622-9436-101 that I ordered. Still uncertain, that the parts installed on the aircraft, were right or wrong, I contacted our coordination center and the technician. After much research, it was determined, that the symbol generators I installed were missing, a software upgrade. By this time, aircraft X had reached ZZZ1, and was on its way back to ZZZ. The coordination center stopped aircraft X, and the correct part number symbol generators were installed. The flight crew reported no problems between the flight. Also the technician is taking measures to clear the stocking problem for these parts.

Title: A B767-300 WAS DISPATCHED IN NON COMPLIANCE WITH THE INCORRECT L AND R SYMBOL GENERATORS INSTALLED.

Narrative: ACFT X CAME INTO ZZZ, MAY/TUE/03. ACFT X HAD AN INBOUND LOG WRITE-UP, STATING THAT THE CAPT'S HSI WAS MISSING ITS PRESENT HEADING MARKER. I TROUBLESHOT THE SYS AND DETERMINED, THAT BOTH L AND CTR SYMBOL GENERATORS WERE AT FAULT. REFING THE IPC, AND CONFERRING WITH PARTS EXPEDITOR, IT WAS DETERMINED MANUFACTURER PART NUMBER 622-9436-101 WAS NEEDED. I ORDERED 2 EACH, 622-9436-101 SYMBOL GENERATORS. I RECEIVED 2 EACH SYMBOL GENERATORS AT THE ACFT. AFTER INSTALLING THE SYMBOL GENERATORS, THE INBOUND PROB WAS CLRED. THE SYMBOL GENERATORS PASSED THEIR TEST PER THE FAULT ISOLATION MANUAL. AT WHICH TIME, I RELEASED THE ACFT AND RETURNED IT TO SVC TO CONTINUE ITS FLT DAY. LATER, WHILE COMPLETING THE PARTS TAG, I REALIZED THE MANUFACTURER PART NUMBER THAT I HAD INSTALLED DID NOT MATCH THE PART NUMBER THAT I ORDERED. OUR PART ORDERING SYS IS GOING THROUGH A TRANSITION. THE OLD SYS WHICH IS BASED ON ATA/ACFT TYPE CODES IS BEING PHASED OUT. THE NEW SYS IS BASED ON MANUFACTURER PART NUMBERS. STILL UNCERTAIN, THAT THE PARTS INSTALLED ON THE ACFT, WERE RIGHT OR WRONG, I CONTACTED OUR COORD CTR AND THE TECHNICIAN. AFTER MUCH RESEARCH, IT WAS DETERMINED, THAT THE SYMBOL GENERATORS I INSTALLED WERE MISSING, A SOFTWARE UPGRADE. BY THIS TIME, ACFT X HAD REACHED ZZZ1, AND WAS ON ITS WAY BACK TO ZZZ. THE COORD CTR STOPPED ACFT X, AND THE CORRECT PART NUMBER SYMBOL GENERATORS WERE INSTALLED. THE FLT CREW RPTED NO PROBS BTWN THE FLT. ALSO THE TECHNICIAN IS TAKING MEASURES TO CLR THE STOCKING PROB FOR THESE PARTS.
