Narrative:
We departed cll on an IFR flight plan to ftw. After departure on runway 34, we made a slight heading change when cleared direct to the waco VOR. The tower (there is no published approach control) advised that he had an inbound aircraft about 20 mi to the northwest. The WX was around 3000 ft broken and visibility was 10 mi with haze. We were approximately 5-6 mi northwest of the field when we were handed off to ZHU, and our altitude was nearing the bases of the broken layer. We were no more than 4 mins into the flight and about 1 min had elapsed from our handoff. I was watching 2 or 3 buzzards out the windshield hoping to stay clear of them when I caught the landing light of a single-engine (cessna?) at 12 O'clock position, and no more than 1 mi. He made a hard left bank at the same time I was making a hard left turn, myself. We passed extremely close. Out of amazement and shock, I returned to the easterwood tower frequency and reported that we had just missed the inbound aircraft, and that houston had said absolutely nothing about the traffic. I will never forget his flippant remark: 'I guess it's a good thing I told you about him.' thanks ATC...for nothing! 20 mi...I think not. And, what about a warning from houston? Whose 'deal' was this!
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: C414 DEP FROM CLL TAKES EVASIVE ACTION FROM AN INBOUND ACFT.
Narrative: WE DEPARTED CLL ON AN IFR FLT PLAN TO FTW. AFTER DEP ON RWY 34, WE MADE A SLIGHT HEADING CHANGE WHEN CLRED DIRECT TO THE WACO VOR. THE TWR (THERE IS NO PUBLISHED APCH CTL) ADVISED THAT HE HAD AN INBOUND ACFT ABOUT 20 MI TO THE NW. THE WX WAS AROUND 3000 FT BROKEN AND VISIBILITY WAS 10 MI WITH HAZE. WE WERE APPROX 5-6 MI NW OF THE FIELD WHEN WE WERE HANDED OFF TO ZHU, AND OUR ALT WAS NEARING THE BASES OF THE BROKEN LAYER. WE WERE NO MORE THAN 4 MINS INTO THE FLT AND ABOUT 1 MIN HAD ELAPSED FROM OUR HDOF. I WAS WATCHING 2 OR 3 BUZZARDS OUT THE WINDSHIELD HOPING TO STAY CLR OF THEM WHEN I CAUGHT THE LNDG LIGHT OF A SINGLE-ENG (CESSNA?) AT 12 O'CLOCK POS, AND NO MORE THAN 1 MI. HE MADE A HARD L BANK AT THE SAME TIME I WAS MAKING A HARD L TURN, MYSELF. WE PASSED EXTREMELY CLOSE. OUT OF AMAZEMENT AND SHOCK, I RETURNED TO THE EASTERWOOD TWR FREQ AND RPTED THAT WE HAD JUST MISSED THE INBOUND ACFT, AND THAT HOUSTON HAD SAID ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ABOUT THE TFC.
