Narrative:

During our approach to las in contact with ZLA, we were cleared to igm VORTAC. Then in contact with lds approach, we were cleared to the mirok 1 arrival. -- During our approach briefing, we made a mirok 1 arrival transition to ILS runway 25L briefing, and we made a coordination that only we were capable to accept a VORTAC arrival to las due to the aircraft equipment (TACAN only/P=transponder with modec). -- Then with all set to make the approach, we were cleared to las vegas via the lynsy RNAV 2 arrival, and we were cleared to lynsy intersection, we requested a heading to ATC to proceed to lynsy international. -- When we got the approach plate, we established that we were unable to comply with that approach. After coordinating that, we made a statement to approach control that we were only TACAN equipment. -- After that, we were still cleared to lynsy intersection, and to cross it at 12000 ft as we were changing charts, trying to establish a position awareness, we began to be high during our descent profile to cross lynsy at 12000 ft. So, we increased our rate of descent to 3500 FPM. -- Finally, we received 'vectors' to intercept the ILS runway 25L final approach course, and the flight was completed. -- I believe that these kinds of misunderstandings can be avoided trying to: 1) know exactly what kind of equipment, based on the flight plan suffix, the aircraft approaching has. 2) avoid changes on the approach arrival, etc, when the cockpit and ATC workloads are critical. 3) because I was the PNF, I think that I was able to use instead of 'we were TACAN only equipment, the words 'unable to comply with lynsy arrival.'

Title: MD80 FOREIGN ACR CREW WAS GIVEN AN RNAV ARR TO LAS WHEN THE ACFT WAS NOT RNAV EQUIPPED. THE CREW INFORMED ATC THE ACFT WAS NOT EQUIPPED.

Narrative: DURING OUR APCH TO LAS IN CONTACT WITH ZLA, WE WERE CLRED TO IGM VORTAC. THEN IN CONTACT WITH LDS APCH, WE WERE CLRED TO THE MIROK 1 ARR. -- DURING OUR APCH BRIEFING, WE MADE A MIROK 1 ARR TRANSITION TO ILS RWY 25L BRIEFING, AND WE MADE A COORD THAT ONLY WE WERE CAPABLE TO ACCEPT A VORTAC ARR TO LAS DUE TO THE ACFT EQUIP (TACAN ONLY/P=XPONDER WITH MODEC). -- THEN WITH ALL SET TO MAKE THE APCH, WE WERE CLRED TO LAS VEGAS VIA THE LYNSY RNAV 2 ARR, AND WE WERE CLRED TO LYNSY INTXN, WE REQUESTED A HDG TO ATC TO PROCEED TO LYNSY INTL. -- WHEN WE GOT THE APCH PLATE, WE ESTABLISHED THAT WE WERE UNABLE TO COMPLY WITH THAT APCH. AFTER COORDINATING THAT, WE MADE A STATEMENT TO APCH CTL THAT WE WERE ONLY TACAN EQUIP. -- AFTER THAT, WE WERE STILL CLRED TO LYNSY INTXN, AND TO CROSS IT AT 12000 FT AS WE WERE CHANGING CHARTS, TRYING TO ESTABLISH A POS AWARENESS, WE BEGAN TO BE HIGH DURING OUR DSCNT PROFILE TO CROSS LYNSY AT 12000 FT. SO, WE INCREASED OUR RATE OF DSCNT TO 3500 FPM. -- FINALLY, WE RECEIVED 'VECTORS' TO INTERCEPT THE ILS RWY 25L FINAL APCH COURSE, AND THE FLT WAS COMPLETED. -- I BELIEVE THAT THESE KINDS OF MISUNDERSTANDINGS CAN BE AVOIDED TRYING TO: 1) KNOW EXACTLY WHAT KIND OF EQUIP, BASED ON THE FLT PLAN SUFFIX, THE ACFT APCHING HAS. 2) AVOID CHANGES ON THE APCH ARR, ETC, WHEN THE COCKPIT AND ATC WORKLOADS ARE CRITICAL. 3) BECAUSE I WAS THE PNF, I THINK THAT I WAS ABLE TO USE INSTEAD OF 'WE WERE TACAN ONLY EQUIP, THE WORDS 'UNABLE TO COMPLY WITH LYNSY ARR.'
