Narrative:
We were on the buntr 1 arrival to phx. Landing runway to east on runway 7L/right and runway 8. Phoenix approach controller called out traffic at our 12 O'clock 5 mi, type and altitude unknown. I confirmed traffic on TCASII, no visual. Our aircraft was descending from 12000-8000 ft. At 9000 ft, approach control called out traffic again at our 12-1 O'clock, 2 mi. At this time, TCASII audio came on , target turn yellow and readout was 800 ft and closing. Soon after, the RA to climb called out. The captain disconnected all automation and set climb power. I was finally able to get a visual on the conflicting traffic. I called phx approach and announced 'air carrier X responding to an RA. We're climbing through 9000 ft.' the controller acknowledged our action and asked how close and location. Less than 1/4 mi and 200 ft to our 1 O'clock position. After we were 'clear of conflict,' we resumed our descent to 8000 ft. The aircraft was a 2-TONE brown and tan cessna (172, 182, or larger), at a cruise altitude of 8500 ft on an ene heading. Note: wrong altitude eastbound VFR. We resumed our arrival with no further problems.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B737 DSNDING FOR PHX EXPERIENCED NMAC WITH CESSNA.
Narrative: WE WERE ON THE BUNTR 1 ARR TO PHX. LNDG RWY TO E ON RWY 7L/R AND RWY 8. PHOENIX APCH CTLR CALLED OUT TFC AT OUR 12 O'CLOCK 5 MI, TYPE AND ALT UNKNOWN. I CONFIRMED TFC ON TCASII, NO VISUAL. OUR ACFT WAS DSNDING FROM 12000-8000 FT. AT 9000 FT, APCH CTL CALLED OUT TFC AGAIN AT OUR 12-1 O'CLOCK, 2 MI. AT THIS TIME, TCASII AUDIO CAME ON , TARGET TURN YELLOW AND READOUT WAS 800 FT AND CLOSING. SOON AFTER, THE RA TO CLB CALLED OUT. THE CAPT DISCONNECTED ALL AUTOMATION AND SET CLB PWR. I WAS FINALLY ABLE TO GET A VISUAL ON THE CONFLICTING TFC. I CALLED PHX APCH AND ANNOUNCED 'ACR X RESPONDING TO AN RA. WE'RE CLBING THROUGH 9000 FT.' THE CTLR ACKNOWLEDGED OUR ACTION AND ASKED HOW CLOSE AND LOCATION. LESS THAN 1/4 MI AND 200 FT TO OUR 1 O'CLOCK POS. AFTER WE WERE 'CLR OF CONFLICT,' WE RESUMED OUR DSCNT TO 8000 FT. THE ACFT WAS A 2-TONE BROWN AND TAN CESSNA (172, 182, OR LARGER), AT A CRUISE ALT OF 8500 FT ON AN ENE HDG. NOTE: WRONG ALT EBOUND VFR. WE RESUMED OUR ARR WITH NO FURTHER PROBS.
