Narrative:
Inbound from practice area. Reported to dupage tower over covered race track that we had 'ATIS information over covered race track inbound to land.' we received a clearance to 'report river, expect straight-in runway 10.' approximately 1 min or less later, a mooney reported 8 mi to the west of the dpa airport. Within 10 seconds of his report, he descended on top of us but was ahead of us slightly. Tower then advised us that there was mooney traffic. At this point the mooney started climbing to be able to see us. We then asked tower for a 360 degree turn to create separation and then proceeded inbound. Reported river and landed runway 10 safely. I did not see the traffic because he was overtaking me from behind. With the mooney aircraft descending he/she should have seen me and passed to the right. Classic example of a low wing aircraft descending on a high wing aircraft.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: C172 PLT AND A MOONEY HAD AN NMAC IN DPA CLASS D AIRSPACE.
Narrative: INBOUND FROM PRACTICE AREA. RPTED TO DUPAGE TWR OVER COVERED RACE TRACK THAT WE HAD 'ATIS INFO OVER COVERED RACE TRACK INBOUND TO LAND.' WE RECEIVED A CLRNC TO 'RPT RIVER, EXPECT STRAIGHT-IN RWY 10.' APPROX 1 MIN OR LESS LATER, A MOONEY RPTED 8 MI TO THE W OF THE DPA ARPT. WITHIN 10 SECONDS OF HIS RPT, HE DSNDED ON TOP OF US BUT WAS AHEAD OF US SLIGHTLY. TWR THEN ADVISED US THAT THERE WAS MOONEY TFC. AT THIS POINT THE MOONEY STARTED CLBING TO BE ABLE TO SEE US. WE THEN ASKED TWR FOR A 360 DEG TURN TO CREATE SEPARATION AND THEN PROCEEDED INBOUND. RPTED RIVER AND LANDED RWY 10 SAFELY. I DID NOT SEE THE TFC BECAUSE HE WAS OVERTAKING ME FROM BEHIND. WITH THE MOONEY ACFT DSNDING HE/SHE SHOULD HAVE SEEN ME AND PASSED TO THE R. CLASSIC EXAMPLE OF A LOW WING ACFT DSNDING ON A HIGH WING ACFT.
