We leveled off at FL300 in IMC. Encountered light chop with only sporadic green showing on radar. Seat belt sign on. Slowed to .75 mach/275 KIAS. Sudden severe turbulence encountered for 30 seconds -- no warning. Maximum altitude deviation 150 ft and vsi of 1500 FPM. Captain called flight attendants and informed one of them knocked unconscious for 60 seconds and 4 others thrown to floor. No passenger injured. Elected to divert to sju for medical care and air carrier inspection. Emergency declared and dispatch notified. Landed smoothly with no further incidents.
