Narrative:
We landed on ord runway 9R and turned off the runway onto taxiway M5. Ord tower cleared us to our gate via a left turn onto taxiway D and via taxiway a. On taxiway A16, wbound, approaching taxiway a, I saw an MD80 on taxiway a, also wbound. The MD80 was converging and closing from behind us and from our right. I told the captain to stop immediately and backed him up by guarding my set of brakes. The captain immediately stopped our aircraft, still on taxiway A16. The MD80 continued in front of us on taxiway a with no apparent speed change. I then confirmed with ord tower that our original clearance was to taxi from taxiway M5 to the gate and remain on tower frequency. Ord tower responded that this was true and added that the MD80 was on ord ground frequency and that the ord ground controller apologized for the incident.

Title: NEAR GND COLLISION OCCURRED AT ORD NEAR TXWY A16 BTWN A B767 AND AN MD80 TAXIING.
Narrative: WE LANDED ON ORD RWY 9R AND TURNED OFF THE RWY ONTO TXWY M5. ORD TWR CLRED US TO OUR GATE VIA A L TURN ONTO TXWY D AND VIA TXWY A. ON TXWY A16, WBOUND, APCHING TXWY A, I SAW AN MD80 ON TXWY A, ALSO WBOUND. THE MD80 WAS CONVERGING AND CLOSING FROM BEHIND US AND FROM OUR R. I TOLD THE CAPT TO STOP IMMEDIATELY AND BACKED HIM UP BY GUARDING MY SET OF BRAKES. THE CAPT IMMEDIATELY STOPPED OUR ACFT, STILL ON TXWY A16. THE MD80 CONTINUED IN FRONT OF US ON TXWY A WITH NO APPARENT SPD CHANGE. I THEN CONFIRMED WITH ORD TWR THAT OUR ORIGINAL CLRNC WAS TO TAXI FROM TXWY M5 TO THE GATE AND REMAIN ON TWR FREQ. ORD TWR RESPONDED THAT THIS WAS TRUE AND ADDED THAT THE MD80 WAS ON ORD GND FREQ AND THAT THE ORD GND CTLR APOLOGIZED FOR THE INCIDENT.
